Abstract The present invention discloses a self-purging centrifuge (10) having a drum (11) mounted within a housing (30) for rotation about a generally vertical axis. A driven rotor assembly is coaxially mounted within the drum (11). The rotor assembly includes a number of trun- cated, cone discs (22, 24, 25) nested together, with adjacent disc surfaces spaced apart. Each disc, excluding the bottommost disc (25), has portions with apertures (23) therein. The apertures (23) are aligned to allow light liquid flow through the disc assembly during the separa- tion process. Contaminated fluid is introduced into the drum (11) below the bottommost disc (25) of the rotor assembly. The rotating rotor assembly propels the fluid outwardly toward a side wall (12) of the drum (11). Paddle members (28) mounted on a rotor head shaft (27) and fins (26) extending downwardly from the underside of the bottommost disc (25) further accelerate and propel the contaminated fluid towards the drum side wall (12). As the drum (11) rotates the solid particles collect on the drum side wall (12). The heavier liquid and the light liquid separate and flow upward. Extension means (50) guide the clarified heavier liquid from the drum (11) into the heavier liquid openings (52) in the drum top wall member (13). An annular baffle member (45) extending downwardly from the drum top wall member (13) guides the clarified light liquid flow overflowing from the rotor assembly upward into the clarified light liquid openings (46) in the drum top wall member (13). Separate collec- tion chambers (48, 53) are provided between the housing (30) and the drum exterior for the clarified liquids, each with an outlet (49, 54) for releasing the liquids from the centrifuge (10). During the purge cycle, carryover of solids and contaminated fluid into the liquid openings (46, 52) is prevented by an extension means (50) mounted to the drum top wall member (13) between the clarified heavier liquid openings (52) and the drum side wall (12). An annular baffle (60) extending inwardly from the bottom of the drum side wall (12) provides drainage for the contaminated fluid and resuspended particles during the purge cycle.
