ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A furnace has a self-recuperative burner fitted into its wall. The hot products of combustion of air and fuel fed to the combustion zone of the burner are directed into the furnace in one direction by operation of the burner, either along the longitudinal axis of the burner outlet port or trans- versely with respect to that axis. The inlet port through which gases are directed from the furnace interior into the exhaust system of the burner is spaced from the outlet port and aligned so that those gases enter the burner along a path which converges with the path of the gases that are directed into the furnace by the burner. Hence the hot gases directed into the furnace by the burner are caused to circulate widely within the furnace in order to obtain access to the inlet port to be exhausted from the furnace.
