A hydrogen generating apparatus (10) that includes a reactant with a vapor phase at greater than atmospheric pressure. The apparatus (10) includes a tank (14) for housing the reactant, such as ammonia. Ammonia communicates with a reactor (22) having a solid reactant, such as lithium aluminum tetrahydride. A check valve (26) is located between the tank (14) and the reactor (22) and is used to control the flow of ammonia to the reactor (22). Heat generated by the reaction is useful in raising the temperature of the reactant in the tank (14). The reactor (22) can also include a gas flow enhancing material that facilitates gas flow through the reactor (22). A filter and getters (46, 50) are employed downstream of the reactor (22) to remove unwanted solids and impurities from the hydrogen gas stream.

Ce générateur d'hydrogène (10) est pourvu d'une cuve (14) contenant un réactif en phase vapeur à une pression supérieure à la pression atmosphérique, de l'ammoniac par exemple. Celui-ci est en communication avec un réacteur (22) renfermant un réactif solide, un tétrahydrure de lithium-aluminium, par exemple.
