A self-sealing valve device (10) for an angiographic catheter (14) includes a housing (48) having a first end (50) adapted to form a luer lock connection (66) with the proximal end (32) of the angiographic catheter. A central bore (54) extends between the first end of the housing and an opposing second end (52), and a deformable elastomeric slit seal (76) is supported across the central bore to selectively seal the proximal end of the catheter. The slit seal is adapted to permit a guide wire (30) to be passed therethrough and advanced into the catheter while sealingly engaging the walls of the guide wire to prevent blood loss through the catheter. The second end of the housing is provided with a female luer lock connection fitting (58) for receiving the conical tip of a syringe (18), stopcock, or the like, and forming a pressure tight connection therebetween.
