A coreless filter (10) comprises a filter element (12), which is a spirally wound loop of material, so that it becomes rigid and forms central passageway (20), is disposed in a housing (14b) and sealed there by endcap (14a). The loop includes a layer of filter material, such as a membrane filter, interposed between two support layers.
