A headed multi-lobed blank, method of manufacturing a self-tapping screw from the blank, and resulting multi-lobed self-tapping (902) screw for joining thin workpieces (1402,1404) provides desirable thread-forming characteristics at the conical tip and body portions, and improved resistance to vibrational loosening near the head. The resulting screw, obtained from the blank and method, incorporates a threaded tapered root portion (906) between the screw head (410) and body por-tion having a cross section that varies from nearly circular in the area adjacent to the under-side of the head (410) to a maximum out-of-round (or lobular) cross section at the intersection of the tapered root portion (906) and the screw body. This shape, combined with a thread profile outer diameter that remains largely constant from the body portion through the tapered root portion (906), and a multiple coil (lead threaded) shape, ensure more secure holding of the screw (902) in a thin anchor material (1404) - with the anchor material extruded axially forward and backward (1405) around the root portion.

L'invention porte sur une ébauche à tête à plusieurs lobes, sur un procédé de fabrication d'une vis autotaraudeuse à partir de cette ébauche et sur la vis autotaraudeuse à plusieurs lobes obtenue (902), permettant d'assembler des pièces minces (1402,1404) et conférant les caractéristiques désirées pour former le filet au niveau des parties coniques de la pointe et du corps et une meilleure résistance au desserrage imputable aux vibrations générées à proximité de la tête. La vis obtenue à partir de l'ébauche comprend une base conique filetée (906) se trouvant entre la tête (410) et le corps et dont la section transversale passe d'une forme quasi circulaire, dans la zone adjacente à la face inférieure de la tête (410), à une forme de faux rond (ou de lobe) au niveau de l'intersection de la base conique (906) et du corps de la vis. Cette forme, combinée à un diamètre externe à profil fileté qui reste en grande partie constant du corps en passant par la base conique (906), et une forme à plusieurs pas (filetage d'introduction), assurent une meilleure retenue de la vis (902) dans un matériau d'ancrage mince (1404), le matériau d'ancrage étant extrudé axialement vers l'avant et vers l'arrière (1405) autour de la base.
