ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A compact belt tensioning device includes a double acting pawl which selectively engages opposed sets of ratchet teeth formed on a stationary mounting. The tensioning device is adapted to be preset in a tensioned state to facilitate installation and repair procedures and may be easily activated by manually releasing the pawl.
