- 1 - Abstract A method of filtering semen and a device therefor. The device comprises a column having openings at both ends, dehydrated particulate filter material in the column and a retainer in the column to retain the filter material. The fixed material is capable of being hydrated to form a multi-layer filter. The method involves hydrating the filter material, with a liquid medium suitable for use with semen, for a time sufficient for the filtering material to hydrate, expand and settle to form a multi-layer filter. A washed semen specimen is then suspended in a liquid medium suitable for use with semen, the semen specimen is passed through the filter device and semen that passes therethrough is recovered. The method and device can be used to increase the number of motile and morphologically normal spermatozoa in the filtrate.
