Apparatus and method for forming slits within side wall members of a packaging structure, includes circular saw blades which are disposed at a cutting station and which are mounted upon a carriage mechanism which is movable between first ELEVATED INOPERATIVE and second LOWERED OPERATIVE positions. The packaging structure is stopped at a predetermined position at which it is desired to slit the packaging structure, the carriage mechanism is disposed at its ELEVATED position, moved vertically downwardly to its LOWERED position so as to form the slits, and retracted upwardly to its original ELEVATED position. The packaging structure is then advanced and stopped at another position at which it is desired to slit the packaging structure, and the entire operative cycle is repeated as necessary.
