ABSTRACT A top opening upcoiler and uncoiler for hot rolled strip is adapted for removal of coils broadside by overhead carrying means. The upcoiler/uncoiler comprises a cylindrical housing in scroll form split on a vertical plane into larger and smaller elements. Each element of the housing is pivoted about its lower edge, those lower edges being spaced vertically from each other. An entry guide leads into the space between the lower edges of the elements. Parallel driven coil-supporting rolls at the Same elevation straddling the vertical plane and forming a continuation of the Iower end of the smaller element. Strip contacting means positioned in one housing element can be pressed against or retracted from the out- side end of the coiled strip. Coils are transferred broadside to a conveyor table adjacent the housing by transfer means comprising a track supported above the upcoiler and extending over the conveyor table, a car movable on that track, means carried by the car for picking up a coil in the coiler, and means carried by the car for raising the pick-up means above the coiler and for lowering them.
