ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A semi-pneumatic energy absorbing and dissipating bumper system for interposition between two objects at least one of which is movable. This bumper system comprises elastomeric module means having an impacting face, upper, lower and side walls terminating in a continuous bead; and support means for mounting the module means on at least one of the objects, including a closure plate upon which the module means is mounted and a backup structure car- rying the closure plate. A plurality of internal reinforcing ribs connect only the impacting face to the upper and lower walls and terminate in a rear edge the configuration of which avoids contact with the closure part prior to impact of the module means with an object. Means are provided for holding only a portion of the continuous bead against the closure plate to form a cavity there- between closed to the atmosphere. Means are also provided for per- mitting selective communication between the cavity and the atmos- phere upon the application of an external force of predetermined magnitude to the module means; these means include valve means in the closure plate opening to the atmosphere upon an increase of pressure within the module means and a space between at least one of the walls of the module means where the bead is not so held and the closure plate formed during impact of the module means by the escape of air from therein.
