ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A non-pressurized bumper comprises an elastomeric member having an impact face and rearwardly extending upper, lower and side walls forming inner surfaces connected by reinforcing ribs, which walls terminate in a partially discontinuous bead; a closure plate is received within the member and abuts the inner surfaces of the walls adjacent the bead; a clamp mounts the bead on the closure plate. The face, walls and closure plate form a cavity which is vented directly to the atmosphere by vent means comprising a valve in the closure plate, and a space between the wall at a discontinuous bead portion and the closure plate, created by escape of air upon impact; a plurality of the aforesaid reinforcing ribs normally are out of contact with the closure plate. The bumper of the invention is readily compressed to a maximum degree at a lower peak loading force than existing pneumatic systems.
