ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A semiconductor element is coated with a passivation layer of a polymeric variable permeability membrane material and then subjected to one or more suitable oxidising or reducing atmospheres as a means for controlling surface states and for adjusting the surface charge thereon. A polyimide silicone copolymer material has been found to be suitable for use on electronic components including semi- conductor elements.
