Assemblies and an associated method for injecting light into a predetermined region are disclosed herein. These assemblies each include a light source arrangement for emitting light and an optical coupling arrangement which is in optical communication with the light source arrangement for directing a first portion of the light into the predetermined region. In a preferred embodiment, the optical coupling arrangement also directs a second portion of the light away from the predetermined region. At least a part of the second portion of light is received by a detector arrangement which produces an output signal in response thereto which output signal is particularly useful for purposes of feedback in regulating the strength of the light emitted by the light source arrangement.
