The disclosed invention includes an apparatus and method for detecting radiation in a detector. The radiation to be detected ionizes the atoms in the intrinsic silicon lattice of the detector to produce a small signal of freed electrons. The small signal is then amplified by avalanche multiplication in a self-limiting manner by preventing the amplified electrons from traveling through a resistive layer, thereby reducing the electric field to limit the avalanche multiplication. An imaging system incorporating the new detector design is also disclosed.

L'invention concerne un appareil et un procédé pour détecter des rayonnements dans un détecteur. Les rayonnements à détecter ionisent les atomes dans le réseau cristallin de silicium intrinsèque du détecteur pour produire un petit signal d'électrons libres. Le petit signal est ensuite amplifié par effet d'avalanche de manière auto-limitative en empêchant les électrons amplifiés de se déplacer dans une couche résistive, ce qui réduit le champ électrique pour limiter l'effet d'avalanche. L'invention concerne également un système d'imagerie intégrant la nouvelle conception de détecteur.
