SEMICONTINUOUS CASTING PROCESS ABSTRACT A semicontinuous casting process comprises stepwise uphill feeding of molten metal into the mould cavity up to a dummy bar, holding the metal in the mould until a skin of casting is formed to a preset thickness, withdrawing the casting for a given length and concurrently feeding molten metal into the mould cavity in an amount corresponding in volume to the given length of withdrawal, wherein after ini- tial feeding of metal into the mould and after that follow- ing each successive step of the casting withdrawal from the mould, the feeding of the molten metal is continued and the latter is then removed beyond the boundary of the dummy bar in volume equalling 0.1 to 0.9 time that of the mould ca- vity. During the holding time, a part of the molten metal is returned, at least for once, into the casting being formed and then is again removed beyond the boundary of the dummy bar. Before the casting formation process is complet- ed, a major part of the molten metal volume is introduced into the casting being formed, whereupon the feeding of molten metal is discontinued until complete solidification of the casting. The invention is readily adaptable to a semicontinuous casting practice for the production of castings which are drawn up from a mould.
