This invention discloses a method and system whereby a conventional electronic mail system (e-mail client) is enhanced by adding functionality to allow a sender of an e-mail message to insert a "process-on-receipt" (P-O-R) request in an e-mail message and for the receiving e-mail client, enhanced to detect said request and process the e- mail and any attached data files without any user intervention. In the preferred embodiment, the receiving e-mail client is further enhanced to compose and send a affirmative feedback reply message to the sender to indicate that the original message and data file was successfully received and a further message to indicate that the original message and data file was successfully processed. Further enhancements are described to add functionality to control the acceptable message and data file sizes and to filter and control the processing of incoming of P-O-R e-mail to avoid unwanted messages being processed automatically. Further enhancements are described whereby the receiving e- mail client is enhanced to compose and send a negative feedback reply message when the system is unable or unwilling to process the message upon receipt.
