ABSTRACT A sensing device for use in the manufacture of an optic probe apparatus for quantitative determination of the chemical properties of a medium in situ, comprises essentially at least one inorganic (e.g. glass or fused silica) optical fiber means, each of which means has at an open end thereof an integral or fused-on tip made from a substantially non-porous glass convertible to a porous glass. The apparatus may e.g. be adapted for quantitative determination of the chemical properties (such as pH, the partial pressure of oxygen and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide) of blood and blood cells, in vitro or in vivo.
