A pointing device for use with computers and other electronic systems incorporates an array of resistive strain gauges on the surface of a substrate. The strain gauges exhibit resistance changes in response to stress or strain applied to the substrate by the movement of a joystick attached to the substrate, the resistance changes being proportional to the extent of movement of the joystick. The strain gauges are electrically connected to control circuitry that successively establishes a series of voltage dividers across different ones of the strain gauges to measure the resistance of each of the strain gauges. From those measurements the position of the pointing device may be determined by comparing the measured resistances with known resistance values that correspond to a neutral stick position. The control circuitry establishes the voltage dividers by applying a known voltage across successive pairs of the strain gauges, and then detecting the voltage at the midpoint between the strain gauges that form each strain gauge pair to which the voltage is applied.

L'invention concerne un pointeur prévu pour être utilisé avec des ordinateurs et autres systèmes électroniques. Ce pointeur comprend un ensemble de jauges de contraintes résistives sur la surface d'un substrat. Ces jauges présentent des changements de résistance en réponse à une contrainte appliquée au substrat par suite du déplacement d'une manette de jeu fixée sur ce substrat. Les changements de résistance sont proportionnels à l'ampleur de ce déplacement. Ces jauges sont électriquement connectées à un circuit de commande qui établit successivement une série de divisions de tension dans différentes jauges pour mesurer la résistance de chacune de ces dernières. A partir de ces mesures, la position du pointeur peut être déterminée en comparant les résistances mesurées aux valeurs de résistances connues qui correspondent à la position neutre de la manette. Le circuit de commande établit les divisions de tension en appliquant une tension connue dans les paires successives de jauges, et en détectant la tension au niveau du point médian entre les jauges qui constituent une paire de jauges et auxquelles la tension est appliquée.
