SENSOR FEED SYSTEM Abstract of the Disclosure A sensor feed system suitable for use within the heavily irradiated environment of a nuclear reactor provides for the controlled displacement of a sensor in monitoring relation along a substantially horizontal tube associated with the reactor. The system has a piston for travelling along the tube, with laterally scanning sensor means carried by the piston. A pressurized fluid supply connected in sealing relation with one end of the tube serves, in use, to displace the piston inwardly along the tube. A flexible tether attached at one end to the piston is used to release and retract the piston, by way of a coiling drum provided with a drive to selectively rotate the drum, with axial positioning provision for the drum for maintaining alignment of the tether with the tube, and tether tension sensing provision connected in controlling relation with the drum when operating in a tether-releasing sense, to maintain the tension acting on the tether at or above a predetermined minimum value.
