ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A separable slide fastener is formed by gapping a pair of slide fastener stringers to remove interengaging elements from a portion thereof leaving ungapped stringer sections, assembling a slider and a retainer in the named order on the remaining interengaging elements of the ungapped stringer section of one of the stringers, forming a support member on the one stringer at the bottom of the ungapped section, cutting the stringers at the gapped portion to form a separate pair of stinger sections including the ungapped stringer sections with the slider, the retainer and the support member, and moving the retainer along inter- engaging elements of the ungapped stringer section of the one stringer onto the support member to lock the retainer on the support member.
