In a process and a device and their use for lubricating and cooling cutting tools and/or workpieces in material-removing machining processes, in which at least two immiscible fluids are supplied to the cutting tools or the workpieces and in which a) a fluid substrate is used to reduce the friction between the cutting tool, workpiece, or swarf and b) a fluid substrate is used to cool the tool, workpiece, tool holder ad possibly also the swarf, it is possible to achieve a surprising increase in the lubricating and cooling effects in that: the two fluids a) and b) are stored and prepared separately in different containers (1,2); each fluid a) or b) is taken from the related container (1) or (2) via a separate supply line (10) or (11) to an application component (3) or (4); each fluid (a) or (b) is taken from the related application component (3) or (4) and applied to the workpiece (15) to be machined or to the tool in use; and, during the relative movement of tool and workpiece (15), firstly the lubricant a) is applied to the penetration or material removing region forming an adhesive film of lubricant and then the coolant b) is applied to the spread film of lubricant.
