Abstract of the Disclosure A leach residue which contains elemental sulfur mixed with metal sulfides, oxides and gangue is slurried with water, heated to melt the sulfur, then introduced into a settling vessel. The settler is supplied with hot water or steam, and mild agitation is maintained between pre- determined depths thereof, whereby a molten sulfur phase is separated from an aqueous phase containing entrained solids.
