Embodiments of the invention provide separa-tion cartridges, methods for fabricating separation cartridges, and methods for using separation cartridges. One aspect of the invention provides a separation cartridge including a first end, a second end, and one or more sorbents located between the first end and the second ends, the one or more sorbents ar-ranged from the first end to the second end in order of in-creasing hydrophobicity. Another aspect of the invention pro-vides a method of creating a separation cartridge having vary-ing hydrophobicity. The method includes loading a filtration material and a cross-linking agent into a cylinder and selec-tively exposing the material to an energy source to selectively initiate a cross-linking reaction within the filtration material.
