A separation medium in macroporous gel form is disclosed which is obtainable by cooling an aqueous solution of at least one gel forming polymer to a temperature, at which the solvent in the system is partially frozen with the dissolved substances concentrated in the non-frozen fraction of the solvent, said gel forming polymer being selected from the group consisting of polymers normally forming gels too fast when an aqueous solution thereof is cooled to a temperature wthin a range below 0oC to enable the formation of a cryogel and said cooling being carried out in the presence of at least one chaotropic agent in said aqueous solution in order to prevent gel formation before the polymer solution is frozen. The use of said separation medium for diverse separation purposes is also disclosed.

L'invention concerne un milieu de séparation sous forme de gel macroporeux obtenu par refroidissement d'une solution aqueuse d'au moins un polymère gélifiant à une température à laquelle le solvant contenu dans le système est partiellement congelé avec des substances dissoutes concentrées dans la fraction non gelée dudit solvant. Ledit polymère gélifiant est sélectionné dans le groupe constitué de polymères formant un gel en général trop rapide, lorsqu'une solution aqueuse est refroidie à une température avoisinant 0 ·C pour permettre la formation d'un cryogel, ledit refroidissement étant réalisé en présence d'au moins un agent chaotropique contenu dans ladite solution, afin d'empêcher la formation de gel avant que la solution polymère ne soit gelée. L'invention concerne également l'utilisation dudit milieu de séparation pour diverses opérations de séparation.
