The invention disclosed relates to a process for the separation of a thixotropic gel-like solids suspension, such as oil sands sludge/fine tails, into a plurality of fractions of useful materials. The process involves mechanically agitating the suspension to break the gel-like structure, followed by mild centrifugation to release from suspension by enhancing the settling rate of the coarser solids. Of particular interest are colloidal solidsfractions, one having gel-forming properties and the other exhibiting emulsifying characteristics.
