SEPARATION OF BACTERIA FROM ORGANIC MATTER ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A filtration system and method for rapidly recovering bacteria from feces and other organic matter has been developed. Chicken feces is filtered through a sequence of essentially non absorbent screens of selected, gradually decreasing pore sizes. The three stage filtration system recovered 90% of the Salmonella spiked into 10 grams of chicken feces and greater than 70% of the Salmonella spp. from 10 grams of naturally infected feces in less than 15 minutes. Although fecal constituents often interfere with the detection of bacteria by most immunologically or nucleic acid based probes, the bacteria recovered by filtration can be detected by these probes. The filtered material is also compatible with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology. The use of the filtration system improved the recovery of Salmonella spp. from feces by standard culture methods.
