ABSTRACT The invention comprises a process for reducing the chromite content of metalliferous ores which involves four basic steps. These are as follows: (i) contacting the ore with a reducing agent at elevated temperature; (ii) cooling the product of step (i); (iii) leaching, aerating, or oxidatively roasting the cooled product; (iv) separating chromite rich fractions from the product of step (iii).
