ABSTRACT A process is provided for separating cobalt from nic- kel in an aqueous solution containing the above-mentioned metals, which consists essentially of (A) contacting the said solution with an organic extraction solvent comprising a mono-alkyl alkylphosphonic acid as extractant and having the general formula: Image wherein R1 and R2 each represent. a branched alkyl group having from 8 to 10 carbon atoms, whereby cobalt is extracted from the aqueous solution into the organic phase, and (B) subsequently separating the resultant cobalt loaded organic phase from the aqueous phase. The method requires fewer stages of solvent extraction and can separate cobalt and nickel to purities above 99% with high yield.
