ABSTRACT Directed to a process for separating the nickel and cobalt contents of an alkaline mixed nickel-cobalt compound, such as a carbonate, wherein acid is added to dissolve a portion of the compound, and treating the resulting liquor with gaseous chlorine while maintaining the pH of the liquor between 2.5 and 4 to provide a nickel solution low in cobalt and a cobalt precipitate low in nickel with high efficiency in reagent consumption, particularly chlorine.
