ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a reagent for forming stabilized, clumped red blood cells, comprising a red blood cell binding component and a polycationic polymer component. The invention further relates to a method for separating plasma or serum from whole blood, comprising contacting whole blood with a red blood cell binding component and a polycationic polymer component to form stabilized, clumped red blood cells and then removing the stabilized, clumped red blood cells from the plasma or serum. The invention also relates to a device for separating plasma or serum from whole blood, comprising a clumping layer, which comprises a red blood cell binding component and a polycationic polymer component, a hematocrit reducing layer and a free cell removing layer and a method for using such a device, comprising introducing whole blood into the device and causing the whole blood to pass through the device.
