Abstract of the Disclosure A process for the separation of three metallurgical phases, particularly lead phases, by decantation, in which the phases are first separated by gravity into low, high and intermediate density phases. The intermediate and high density phases are transferred to a second vessel while the low density phase is decanted over a weir. The inter- mediate and high density phases flow over a weir which is provided in the second vessel at a level L above the top (L') of the passage from the first vessel such that Image where g1, g2 and g3 are the densities of the low, intermediate and high density phases respectively, (h1 + h2) is the difference between the level of the first weir and L', h1 is the desired layer thickness of the low density phase and h2 is positive.
