A method for separating a platinum group element which comprises a step (A) of treating a material containing a platinum group element and one or both of selenium and tellurium with an alkali, a step (B) of leaching selenium and/or tellurium, and a step (C) of separating a leaching residue containing the platinum group element from a solution containing leached selenium and/or tellurium. The method can be used for separating selenium, tellurium and a platinum group element from a material containing a platinum group element and one or both of selenium and tellurium with good efficiency.
