Abstract The present invention relates to an apparatus for separating a material having mixed floating and sinking fractions. A unit provides a fluid stream. A first enclosed drum has an interior chamber which receives the fluid stream. One end of the drum has an overflow opening. A second drum is carried within the interior chamber of the first drum. The second drum is partially within the fluid in the first drum and has an open end and an enclosed end, with the enclosed end having a central opening. An enclosed screen container is carried within the interior chamber of the first drum adjacent the central opening. A unit is provided for introducing the material to be separated together with the fluid stream into the screen container. Materials retained by the screen container overflow into the second drum and fluid and materials passing through the screen container fall into the first drum to establish a fluid current within the first drum between the screen container and the overflow opening. A portion of the floating fraction overflow into the second drum is separated in the fluid from the sinking fractions. A unit is provided for agitatively moving the sinking fraction within the second drum toward the open end of the second drum, whereby the sinking fraction within the second drum is further separated from the floating fraction and the sinking fraction is introduced into the first drum. A unit is provided for agitatively moving the sinking fraction introduced in the first drum in an opposite direction to the fluid current whereby the fluid current scrubs the sinking fraction to further separate the floating fraction therefrom and overflows the floating fraction through the overflow opening of the first drum. A unit removes the sinking fraction from the first drum.
