The color sequential photoelectric scanning device for transparent originals includes a light source for illuminating a positioned original, a color shutter for sequentially modulating the color and intensity of light being incident on the original, a photoelectric surface sensor, which receives the light passing through the original and converts it into electrical scanning signals in a two-dimensional pixel-by- pixel manner, an optical member for imaging the original onto the surface sensor, an electronic member for controlling the surface sensor and for reading the scanned signals that are generated by the surface sensor. The color shutter consists of a combination of a rotatably driven filter wheel and at least one rotatably driven aperture wheel, the aperture wheel and the filter wheel being coaxial, said filter wheel and said at least one aperture wheel having different rotational speeds, said rotational speeds having a fixed relationship to each other. The time consuming acceleration of filters or apertures has been dropped through a combination of a continuously rotating filter wheel with one or more continuously rotating aperture wheel or wheels, so that extremely short measuring cycles are possible. At the same time, sufficiently steep rise and fall transition phases of the light and dark phases (short opening and closing times) are attained, and thus a more efficient use of the measuring light is achieved.
