ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is disclosed for sequestering toxic, hydrophobic organic materials in surface-water sediment by treating the sediment with carbonaceous adsorbents made by partial pyrolysis of macroporous synthetic polymer particles in the presence of carbon-fixing moieties such as sulfonate groups. In an embodiment of the process, the adsorbents remain in contact with the sediment after treatment.
