Series capacitor equipment for distribution networks with a capacitor bank for connection into a power line with a voltage-dependent resistor connected in parallel with the capacitor bank, for protection of the capacitor bank against overvoltages, and with bypass members for bypassing the capacitor and the resistor at an overcurrent in the power line. The bypass members comprise a high-speed circuit- closer connected in parallel with the capacitor and the resistor, a switch connected in parallel with the high-speed circuit-closer, and a trip control circuit adapted, at an overcurrent in the power line, to initiate closing of the high-speed circuit-closer, for protection of the resistor against thermal overload, and subsequent closing of the switch, for protection of the circuit-closer against overload.
