48,251 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A series capacitor bank, or other electrical equipment, is protected from overvoltages by apparatus including solid state non-linear resistor means, such as zinc oxide resistors, in a branch without spark gaps across the equipment and having in parallel therewith a spark gap circuit branch whose firing is forced upon the occurrence of sufficient current through the non-linear resistors to endanger their capability using means for sensing the current and triggering the firing of spark gaps.
