ABSTRACT A ballast for starting and operating series-sequence fluorescent lamps includes a capacitor in the operating circuit which comes into play when the second of two lamps is ignited and permits the establishment of series capacitive reactance in the operating circuit which controls the level of lighting. The capacitor may be connected in such a manner that the lighting level is permanently established by suitable connection when the ballast is connected into the lighting circuit or it may be selectively connected, alone or alternatively with another capacitor or a direct connection through the medium of an external switch to provide selective levels chosen by the user, The ballast is of the type which starts the lamps with the use of a lagging circuit but switches the circuit into leading when the second lamp has ignited and is leading thereafter.
