The present invention is concerned with a method of, and apparatus for, detecting the source and movement of emails that are propagated by an email virus. The invention comprises a server configured to send outgoing electronic messages on behalf of terminals connected thereto and to deliver incoming electronic messages to the terminals, each terminal being accessed by one or more users. The server comprises: receiving means arranged to receive data relating to such electronic messages; analysing means arranged to analyse the received data in accordance with a specified criterion, so as to identify those electronic messages that satisfy the criterion; identifying means arranged to identify the destination of the identified electronic messages; processing means arranged to send a message to each of the identified destinations, requesting suspension of delivery of the identified electronic messages. This therefore allows suspect electronic messages (emails) to be identified, and recalled, or quarantined at a destination server, thereby preventing the spread of suspect emails as early as possible. The method also collates and presents email activity as a function of the position, within an organization, of the origin of an email. The email activity can be presented graphically, thus providing an enhanced user interface to email data within a company. In other words, awareness of movement of emails within a company is greatly enhanced. This represents an improvement over the prior art, because it provides a faster way of identifying potential viral damage within, for example, a company intranet.
L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de détecter la source et le mouvement de courriers électroniques (e-mails) qui sont propagés par un virus e-mail, et un appareil associé. L'invention comprend un serveur configuré pour envoyer des e-mails sortants en provenance de terminaux connectés à celui-ci et pour distribuer des e-mails entrants aux terminaux, un ou plusieurs utilisateurs pouvant accéder à chaque terminal. Ledit serveur comprend: un moyen de réception conçu pour recevoir des données associées auxdits e-mails; un moyen d'analyse conçu pour analyser les données reçues conformément à un critère spécifié, de façon à identifier les e-mails qui satisfont au critère; un moyen d'identification conçu pour identifier la destination des e-mails identifiés; un moyen de traitement conçu pour envoyer un e-mail à chaque destination identifiée, demandant un arrêt de distribution des e-mails identifiés. Les e-mails suspects peuvent ainsi être identifiés, et mémorisés ou mis en quarantaine au niveau d'un serveur de destination, ce qui permet d'éviter que ceux-ci ne se répandent, et ce le plus tôt possible. Ledit procédé permet également de classer et de présenter l'activité des e-mails en fonction de la position, au sein d'une organisation, de l'origine de l'e-mail. L'activité des e-mails peut être présentée graphiquement, ce qui permet à une interface utilisateur améliorée d'envoyer par e-mail des données au sein d'une entreprise. En d'autres termes, la connaissance du mouvement des e-mails au sein d'une entreprise est considérablement améliorée. Ledit procédé représente une amélioration par rapport à la technique antérieure, car il constitue un moyen permettant d'identifier plus rapidement des nuisances potentielles provoquées par un virus, par exemple au sein du réseau Intranet d'une entreprise.
