Setting device with a variable setting stroke adjustment and method of setting the setting stroke of setting device. Setting device includes a housing, a pulling rod structured and arranged for movement in an axial direction, an adjustably positionable stop element structured and arranged to adjustably limit a setting stroke of the pulling rod, and a locking element movable between a closed position and an adjustment position. The stop element has at least one region with a polygonal contour, and, in the closed position, the locking element engages in a path of motion of edges of the polygonal contour and, in the adjustment position, releases the path of motion.
