The invention relates to a sewing machine with a thread withdrawing device (24), which prevents the needle thread end from being caught under the material pressure plate (9), at the beginning of a sewing process. The thread withdrawing device (24) comprises an arm (22), with a thread eyelet (23), said arm being arranged perpendicular to the path of the needle thread (27), running between two thread guides (25, 26). Said arm may be dis-placed perpendicularly across the said path of the needle thread (27), between a rest position and an operating position.
