A shaft seal comprising a seal element of polymer material having a sealing surface adapted to bear against a shaft under resilient pressure. In the zone of contact so formed there is provided at least one annular projection, molded in one piece with the seal element, which concentrically encloses the shaft to be sealed. The seal element is of rubber having a Shore A hardness of 65 to 90, and the or each annular projection is depressable by the shaft into the sealing surface as a result of the surface pressure exerted by the seal element.
