ABSTRACT A shaft seal for a shaft rotatable in a housing includes a counter ring having an axial end surface of annular shape which extends essentially perpendicular to the axis, as well as a sliding ring which is resiliently forced against the counter ring and has an annular front surface that is essentially parallel to the counter ring end surface, which surfaces rub against each other upon rotation of the shaft. One of the counter ring end surface and the sliding ring front surface is eccentrically positioned in relation to the other for the removal of contaminants from between these surfaces during use of the shaft seal in order to extend the service period of the seal.
