ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A device is disclosed for sealing an annular opening between two machine elements. The preferred application of the device is for sealing an opening formed in a wall in the case where a rotatable shaft extends through the wall opening. The invention is particularly useful for use in a polluted environment and has the advantage that it can, with facility, be applied to existing structures. The device comprises a sealing element formed of elastic material, the sealing element being sealingly connectable with one of said machine elements and enclosing the other machine element. Means are provided for supplying to the surface of the sealing element facing said other machine element a fluid which is at a pressure exceeding the pressure at each side of the sealing element. The novel sealing device further comprises a housing which encloses and sealingly engages the sealing element and is sealingly connectable with the first machine element, and a sleeve extending through said housing. me outer surface of the sleeve engages, the surface of the sealing element which is adapted to be supplied with a pressure fluid. The near surface of the sleeve is adapted sealingly to engage the other machine element when the sleeve is positioned on it.
