A B S T R A C T SHAFT ASSEMBLY An assembly for intermittent support of a rotatable shaft comprises an annular collar substantially coaxial with the shaft and fixed thereabout for rubbing contact with the shaft only after the shaft deflects a pre- determined amount from its rotational axis. the bending mode of the shaft is altered and the first order critical speed of the shaft is increased to a level above the maxi- mum speed at which the shaft may be driven, to prevent excessive vibration and consequent damage to the shaft, associated end couplings and housing.
