A method of measurement of static shape of deformation comprising the steps of: mounting accelerometers on tubular rigid bodies separated at known spacings by flexible tubing; covering the tubing with braid to form a flexible substrate with reduced twist; calibrating the flexible substrate at known orientations within a uniform field to obtain calibration values relating orientations of rigid bodies to sensor data; attaching the flexible substrate to a deformable volume within the uniform field; measuring the shape of the deformable volume from the shape of the flexible substrate derived from orientations of the rigid bodies, known spacings, known constraint of twist, and known calibration values.
