Abstract A process is described for the shape casting of metal matrix composites, e.g. aluminum matrix composites. A charge of molten metal matrix composite material is poured down through a sprue into a mould cavity forming a pattern of the product to be cast. Then the composite is allowed to solidify within the mould, after which the cast shaped product is removed from the mould. The novel feature comprises pouring a charge of molten metal matrix composite into the sprue while preventing any outflow of composite from the bottom of the sprue, holding the charge of molten metal matrix composite in the sprue for a time sufficient to allow engulfed gas bubbles to disengage from the molten composite flowing through the sprue and thereafter allowing the charge of molten composite to flow into and fill the mould cavity. The castings obtained are free of bubbles or voids and may, for instance, be in the form of automotive brake rotors.
