A shape recognition process is arranged to represent an objective shape in a dot row on two dimensional plane and a shape model for a collation therewith of the objective shape in a geometrical shape as a set of limited numbers of nodal points and line elements connecting between the respective nodal points, to set a standard value and a tolerance implicating therein the standard value with respect to a feature which is the length or gradient of the respective line elements of the shape model, and to evaluate an extent of coincidence of the objective shape with the shape model on the basis of any difference from the standard value and the relationship to the tolerance of the objective shape upon the collation of the objective shape with the shape model.
