Shaped bodies are made of an acid or basic macroporous ion exchange resin. The shaped bodies may be used as packing material in chromatography columns and have substantially the shape of Raschig rings, Berl saddles, Torus saddles, other rings having a web or cross-webs, pall-rings, hollow bodies or hollow spheres. The shaped bodies have a proportion of cavities of 5 to 95% by volume of the macroform, a BET-surface of 0.01 to 1000 m2/g and an exchange capacity of 0.05 to 10 meq/g. The shaped bodies are provided with catalytic activity through an endowment with a metal or metals of Groups VII and VIII of the periodic table. Such catalytically active shaped bodies may be used for chemical reactions such as etherification, hydration, dimerization, oligomerization, esterification, hydrogenation, hydration or alkylation or combinations thereof. Use of the shaped bodies in combinations of the above reactions with separation operations such as adsorption, absorption, extraction, stripping, distillation, rectification, fractionation or membrane processes and the like is preferred.
